Earthwork (terracotta, 2019)

Earthwork is made from unfired terracotta, ground down from large forms into successive stages of granularity, in a cycle of destruction and potential renewal. The piece suggests the rubble that is left as buildings are demolished, and land is excavated, increasingly often to further a form of development that does not serve the interests of most people’s lives. Clay is used to construct forms of shelter throughout the world. It reminds us of our connection and dependence upon the earth as our home, easily lost in an age of distraction.

Exhibited in ‘Sheltered’, group exhibition with members of ACWU at Southwark Cathedral, November 21, 2019 - January 2020, coinciding with ‘The Big Sleepout’.
